Overview The Minors Division fields an All-Star team of 9- and 10-year old players, plus a Select 9 team to participate in tournaments and exhibition games in the post season, and in the District 5 Minors All-Star tournament. Traditionally, the tournament starts in the middle of June and runs for two weeks while Provincials commence the 3rd week of July and last for a period of one week. The Select 9 team participates in various tournaments and exhibition games and typically wraps up no later than mid-July. Communication and Timing of All-Star Team Selections A notice will be issued by the Division Coordinator regarding the tryout dates, times and locations for All-Stars and Selects. Teams must be selected only on or after the date specified by Little League International each year. Typically this date is not prior to June 15th or two weeks in advance of a district tournament commencing. Teams are disbanded after their District, Provincial, National or International play has ended. Managers and Coaches Managers of an All-Star team are selected by the WVLL Board based on written applications submitted around June 1st each year. The appointed Manager will be responsible for the All-Star selections for their respective team. The Manager will also select his/her assistant coaches, to be approved by the President. Eligibility Any player may try out for an All-Star or Select team for which they are eligible to play based on their age and residence eligibility requirements. You must play on a league team, live within the WVL Little League boundaries and be baseball age 9 or 10. It is mandatory that players play within their designated division and age group for All-Stars. Minor age players who played up a division in Major during the regular season are eligible to play on the Minor All-Star team. Selection Process and Criteria Players will be rated in an unbiased manner during the selection process where individual skills and abilities will be noted and rated by impartial assessors. The team Manager will have equal input in selections as he/she will need to consider positional requirements and may require players suiting his/her team philosophy. Selection criteria are as follows: eligibility, availability, ability, skills, desire and specific team needs. In addition to baseball skills the following will be taken into account; a players’ behavior throughout the entire baseball season and his/her alignment with the Players Code of Conduct including a positive attitude, sportsmanship, teamwork and regular participation. The All-Star Manager may also gather relevant player information from other regular season coaches. The players are also expected to make a commitment to try and attend all practices and games. If a player is notified about being selected to an All-Star team, the parents should let the head coach know if vacations and/or other conflicts will prevent the player from participating.
